Zenmartini and the Keepers of Light

Zenmartini and the Keepers of Light is a blog about seeing the world through photography, it's history, processes and social implications.

A few months ago Montclair Patch began running my photographs under the “Glimpse of Montclair” headline. Since that time, I’ve received a number of requests for information about the specific images as well as questions about my photography in general.

Recently one of the editors of Patch suggested that it might be a good idea to start writing a blog about making images. So here we are.

In my life, making images has been the only thing that I ever really wanted to do. I’m not sure how that happened but much like getting older it’s something that was inevitable.

What this blog will become is a good question. I would like to see an active discussion about photography; it’s history, processes and social implications. But I'll be happy with what I get. I would like you to contribute your images as well as thoughts on the medium so we can do one of my favorite things, which is talk about pictures and the people who make them.

Some of my best images IMHO are ones taken with a toy camera, a 2 megapixel digital and my cell phone. It doesn't matter what you are using to get what you see "out there". So start documenting the world around you. Photograph what you know and lastly share your vision.

Oh one other thing...feel free to Strunk and White me. I need it.

I’ll go first.

The images from Jinx Proof Tattoo shop are from a new series that I am doing.
A few weeks ago I submitted a photograph of my son's friend home from California with a lot of tattoos and quite a few piercings. The photograph sparked quite a few conversations. Either people thought the tats were cool or disgusting, And that's what prompted my interest in learning more about the sub-culture of body artists.

The other pictures this week were taken around town on a single 90 minute walk.
Sometimes I think I'm not going to find a single new thing to photograph on my walks. I'll ask myself why anyone would want to see the side of a building or a bunch of shopping carts? I'm always surprised though at what there is to see when I just stop thinking and just start looking.
