Patch's MHS Columnist Wins NYT Essay Contest

Congrats to Lena Rawley for winning the grand prize in the contest for teens about bullying.

Over the last year, Lena Rawley, a 17-year-old junior at Montclair High School, has written a weekly column for Montclair Patch, giving readers an inside look at what students are doing and talking about. Now Rawley has won an essay contest held by New York Times writer Nicholas D. Kristof. Out of 1,200 essays, Rawley's piece on bullying, which included the following, won the grand prize: "Teenage girls are cruel super-humans from a distant galaxy sent here to destroy us all,” she began. “They have the self-entitlement of a celebrity heiress and the aggression of a Roman gladiator. Like vampires, they feed off the blood of the weak. They’re pubescent monsters. “Not only was I a former teenage mean girl, but I was tortured, tormented, …

Email your own tips to Shelley@patch.com.

The official barbeque season begins Memorial Day weekend, but this weekend will be a good one as well, weather-wise, for a fabulous outdoor gathering. Here are five tips to help you throw the perfect barbeque. 1) First, if you don't want to cook, you can order your barbeque from The Wood Pit at 108 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair. The Wood Pit specializes in smoked ribs, beef, chicken, and other smoked meats that are, in a word, fantastic. You can also go to the website to get coupons by email. 2) Second, no cookout is complete without yummy sweet treats. Carousel Cakes at 25 Church Street in Montclair—home of Oprah’s favorite red velvet cake, decadent cakes, pies, gourmet cupcakes, and more—has desserts to satisfy all sweet tooths …

Terrible advice. For "perfect BBQ" You need 1. Good family and friends. 2. Wood for your BBQ. The flavor is in the smoke. 3. The right blend of spices and rubs to create your very own flavor profile. I can't believe they listed both wine coolers and Oprah in a BBQ article.   more ›

TMZ was the first to report that the five-time Grammy winner was in Florida and putting the finishing touches on a new album at the time of her death. The report adds, "We spoke to someone who was with Summer a couple of weeks ago ... who says she didn't seem too bad." Summer had been living in Englewood, Fla. with her husband Bruce Sudano. Newark Bears Set to Open 2012 Season

Community-focused Bears start season Thursday night against Worcester Tornadoes

The Newark Bears had one final tune-up Wednesday afternoon before Opening Day and the start of their 15th season. The opponent however wasn't another team of professionals or a future opponent in the CanAm League the Bears participate in. Instead, it was the baseball team of Newark Tech High School. While it was merely an exhibition, the event was just the latest example of how the Bears are not just trying to be a winning team on the field but a part of the Newark community. "I think it's very important," said new Bears manager Ken Oberkfell about having that relationship with the city. "You want to meet as many people, as many organizations, as many businesses as you can. It promotes the team, it gets people into the ballpark. We're here…

The mom and acupuncturist is hosting a Women's Wellness Free Event on Sunday, May 20.

Patti Safian is a licensed acupuncturist who, just last year, announced the "radical" expansion of her NJ Acupuncture & Fertility Center.   In addition to acupuncture services, Safian offers Yoga for Fertility classes in The Sacred Space, a private yoga studio located in the Center at 70 Park Street, Suite 208, Montclair. Montclair Patch recently asked Safian five questions in order to learn more about her. Q) How long have you been in Montclair and what do you do here? A) We have been living in Montclair for almost eight years now ... hard to believe it has already been that long! I am a Mom and Acupuncturist in town. My Acupuncture practice focuses on Women's Health and, more specifically, on Reproductive Health. However, I end up …

Visions For Vacancies: What Should Move To 695 Bloomfield Ave.?

The space formerly occupied by Luna Stage is for sale.

Let's call this a modern spin on community planning—Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table. In an occasional column, we'll present a new vacant space and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules, and all the other zoning jargon that puts people most to sleep. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community? We launched this new occasional feature a few months ago by focusing on the now vacant spot at 622 Valley Road in Upper Montclair, the former home of Five Guys Burgers and Fries. (Tuscany, an Italian restaurant, will open in this space soon!) …

It could be an "arts building" serving any number of local semi-professional and professional performance groups on a cooperative basis. Wouldn't that be great? Probably not cost-effective, but wonderful to think about. Or, what about a satellite facility of NJPAC where workshops and such could be held for NJPAC's visiting performers who wanted to interface in a deeper way. Or a downtown training…   more ›
