no. it's like closing the barn door after the horse got out. Should they show up in force on someRead More hot weather nights unannounced and take off a bunch of gang members running amuck? Yes... They should all be undercovers, in undercover cars and on foot and just lock up as many thugs a couple times a week with NO PATTERN. This will drop the crime rate there.. Unfortunately it will rise in neighboring towns.. The real answer IS A CULTURE CHANGE. The answer is NOT to let out "non violent" drug offenders either. Many times these guys get caught doing minor things that put them behind bars for a few months or a year at a time.. GUESS WHAT THEY'RE NOT DOING WHEN THEY'RE BEHIND BARS? committing VIOLENT CRIMES... Does it cost us $$$ to kep them there? Of course... Ask yourself HOW MUCH $$$ it costs to keep them revolving through the doors, arrested and released in a couple days.. clogging all the courts, the overtime it creates by cops, the wear and tear on the society surrounding these repeat offenders.. When is a politician gonna stand up and do what NEEDS to be done.. Fight the Governor and the US attorney General on this terrible idea of releasing non violent offenders out early.. That's my opinion.. everyone is entitled to theirs. Bringing in a force to "calm" the natives is not the answer.. it's only the beginning IF IT'S the BEGINNING... it's so simple.. no m ore gifts for having more than one child, no more section 8 for longer than ONE YEAR and that's it.. you want welfare? have them report to work for the state.. then you get paid.. get something from them.

@Paul J. DiBartolo: kindly explain what Corey Booker did for Newark. To the best of my knowledge heRead More did NOTHING. So lets hope he doesn't do for NJ like the NOTHING he did for his Newark.

There would be no racists if it were not for certain segments of society behaving badly.
McCorry April 20, 2014 at 02:22 pm
NO NO NO Heywood you can't say that. segments of society is just a code for the no no thing.
Boss Hogg April 20, 2014 at 02:35 pm

Eric Rudolph was a racist, anti-semetic, militant, twisted religious zealout, murdering psycopath,Read More not a "right wing fanatic." He was absent political bent.

Speedy trial? Define speedy. Charles Manson and company committed the Tate/LaBianca murders inRead More 1969. The trial wasn’t until two years later. It took over a year before Jack Ruby went on trial for shooting Oswald. And the entire nation saw him do that on TV. The infamous Boston Strangler was caught in early 1964 but wasn’t sentenced until 1967. Its only on Law & Order that it goes from commission of the crime to sentencing in an hour.

@Dan P: You state that Marynary's comment is true. Why then do you imply that it is perfectly fineRead More to lie about guns and minimize "human violence" of the trigger puller.
ROSA FLOUNOY April 20, 2014 at 09:29 pm
All this collaborations with Federal & State Agencies were well over due. Nothing is wrong withRead More Newark, it's just the ones who commit crimes makes it looks bad. I'm quite sure millions of people today living in the "suburbs," lived in Newark and knew it as a place to raise a family until the riot.
Dan P April 20, 2014 at 11:41 pm
@Sam Walton: I am a little confused. How am I implying that it is perfectly fine to lie about guns?Read More I think there may be a miscommunication here. I was not minimizing the human violence of the trigger puller. I was just stating that it is more likely a homicide will occur over an aggravated assault when a gun is involved. I don't condone aggravated assaults, but I would take them any day over murders.

The guardrails at this pier are 3.5 feet high. No one fell in unless they're 8 feet tall.

Lets hear it for the NJDOT. They could have started the work on Christmas, Palm Sunday, or AshRead More wednesday, but they chose instead to begin the chaos on the first day of Passover thus ensuring that the large percentage of Jewish workers arrive late at work but most importantly arrive home long after the sedars are to begin. Anti Semitism? NO Piss Poor Planning? Yes!

Wow. This must have been kept quiet. I don't even remember this being originally reported. To me,Read More its just another sad story of infinite corruption for a corrupt County in the most Corrupt State in our Country. The News media should do a series or expose on that Prosecutor's Office in Essex, it would be an interesting timeline of the pattern of crimes committed in that Office from the people who are supposed to uphold the Law. Thanks for reporting this. Good article! NJ

How about Montclair police ALSO participate in monitoring the crosswalks located all over town forRead More pedestrians? As someone who walks frequently, I am amazed at the number of drivers who ignore the crosswalks and signs, and speed limits near downtown. You really do take your life in your hands crossing a street in Montclair!

I can not tell you how many people I see with their cell phones in their hands while driving. AtRead More stop lights...you can see people texting and/or using their cell phones all the time. You can tell because when the light turns green...they fail to move because they are so busy texting. Is there really anything that can be done about this dangerous trend?

The TMZ video I just watched showed what it looked like to be Ray Rice pulling his drunk fiance outRead More of an elevator. He may have been mad at her and had a fight with her but I doubt he had intent to severely harm her or I'm sure she would be in critical condition right now. I am not a football fan or a Ray Rice fan.... I'm just calling it like it is.
