Golf Outing to Support Montclair Football Program

You don't even have to be a golfer to participate.

Plans are underway for the annual golf outing and dinner to benefit the Montclair High School football program. The event, organized by alumni and sponsored by the Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence, will be held June 25 at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield. The event chairperson, Ray Carnevale, a member of the Class of 1965, said that last year’s golf outing raised $31,000 and served as a mini-reunion for Montclair High School alumni. “We had 114 golfers and 180 people for dinner,” Carnevale said. “It was a day of laughs, storytelling and ‘great to see you!’”  Carnevale continued, “this is one outing at which you do not have to be a golfer.  It is an outing just to have fun and reminisce” and, of course, support the …

MSU To Serve As Headquarters For NJPR News

New York Public Radio and MSU announce a joint media partnership.

This is from a press release submitted by Montclair State University to Montclair Patch on Tuesday. New York Public Radio (NYPR), one of the nation’s premier public radio franchises, and Montclair State University, which offers educational programs in communication, broadcasting, multi-platform journalism, and digital media, today announced a new partnership that will expand and deepen NYPR’s service to New Jersey while also leveraging the student talents and faculty capabilities of the University’s School of Communication and Media. The joint initiative is being launched, in part, through funding provided by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. NYPR, which comprises WNYC, WQXR, and The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, created New …

Should Public School Districts Pay for Private School Busing?

The state requires public school districts to pay the transportation costs for students attending private and parochial schools.

New Jersey public school districts have been paying to bus parochial and private school students for years. A report in The Asbury Park Press puts the annual cost at $77 million a year for about 90,000 students of religious and other private schools, money that comes out of local budgets funded by property taxes. Montclair's public school district pays about $270,000 a year for the transportation of students to religious and other private schools. According to the paper, districts are required "to spend up to $884 on transportation for each student attending a private school, be it on a school bus or a parent driving the child to class." The state is one of only a handful that pay for private-school busing, with 34 banning all public …

POLL: Are Student Secrets a Proper Test Question?

Some parents in New Jersey weren't happy with one of the questions on the NJASK test.

The NJ ASK standardized testing is designed to test the general knowledge of state kindergarten through eighth grade students, but this year for some third graders, it also tested their ability to keep a secret. According to the Asbury Park Press, students in New Jersey reported to their parents that they were asked to reveal a secret in an essay portion of the test, and reveal why the secret was hard to keep. New Jersey Department of Education Spokesman Justin Barra confirmed with the Asbury Park Press that the "secret" question was on the test, but was not a part of the students' scores. But some parents, including Richard Goldberg of Marlboro, whose 9-year-old twins told him about it, said he thinks the question was inappropriate. …

MHS Students: Don’t Fear Summer Homework!

MHS junior Lena Rawley writes about what awaits high school students this summer

Summer homework. An oxymoron that rings fear in the hearts of all students. It’s dreadful, it’s dismal, it’s monotonous; to Montclair High School students it’s worse than sun poisoning. “Homework is meant for school, not for summer!” protests sophomore Rachel Mann.   “I spend the entire school year thinking and working,” says sophomore Bridget Festa, echoing her classmate’s distaste, “I just want to spend my summer relaxing, doing really anything but thinking.”   But, before you throw a fit, you need to take a deep breath and realize that it’s really not what you think. The first image that comes to mind when the words “summer” and “homework” are loosely tossed around in casual conversation is of the dreadful stacks of assignments that …

Bike To School Day A Huge Success

This article is by Alex Kent

Sunny skies brought out bikers at Montclair's first Bike to School Day today, a national event that is part of the Safe Routes to School program, encouraging children to walk or bike to school instead of being driven. The students get exercise, while traffic decreases, and the kids love it. Everyone wins! At Edgemont Elementary, bike racks were overflowing. And, even children who took the bus did a walking lap around Edgemont Park so they could participate. Everyone who biked received marigold seedlings to take home. At Nishuane Elementary, bikers met at the Montclair Public Library, and then biked on to Nishuane. Attached is a photo of Nishuane riders, as well as one of Brian and Olivia Champeau celebrating Olivia's 8th birthday by …

Can You Boost Memory By Looking Off To The Side?

An MSU professor is studying memory retrieval

Montclair State University Associate Professor of Psychology Ruth E. Propper is the Principal Investigator, or PI, on a three-year, $300,000 Department of Defense (DOD) contract that supports her ongoing research on the ways the brain retrieves memories. This research could help improve both soldiers’ memories of place names and locations in unfamiliar terrains and their navigation skills. Propper’s work with the United States Army will build on findings published in the February 2012 issue of Brain and Cognition that focused on whether the left brain or right brain—or a combination of both—retrieves language-based and location-based memories. College undergraduates were asked to look to the left or to the right to test competing theories…

Russ Berrie Foundation Awards $150K To Jerseyans Who Make A Difference

One education initiative founder from Montclair is awarded $5,000

Two Mahwah residents were among 11 winners of the Russ Berrie Foundation Award For Making a Difference. The group was collectively awarded $150,000 at a ceremony Wednesday afternoon to help fund the “good” they do in the community. Winners from across the state were chosen from a pool of New Jersey residents nominated by their peers for being “unsung heroes” in the community. “There is a very wonderful, dedicated committee that reviews all of the nominations we get, and the people who are finalists for the award each year come from all walks of life,” Angelica Berrie, who is President of the Russ Berrie Foundation on behalf of her late husband, said. “Russ had this idea to recognize people who are doing amazing things, but who aren’t …
