Alexander: More Gun Control Now [Op-Ed]

Mark Alexander is challenging state Sen. Nia Gill (D-Essex) in 34th District Democratic Primary on June 4.

The following letter was written by Mark Alexander, of Montclair. He is a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama and current Democratic candidate for the New Jersey state Senate in the 34th District.  This was Sen. Nia Gill’s (D-Essex) excuse to explain her support for the watered-down gun control legislation introduced by Sen. Steve Sweeney (D-Glouchester): We cannot let the perfect be the enemy of the good. It is baffling to me that Gill could even utter those words in front of the families of Newtown victims. That’s Gill’s excuse for not pushing forward a bill limiting the size of ammunition magazines the other day. All elected officials must stand by a simple pledge: when it comes to protecting our children, we must put …

I pause to think about how much of the complaining about NJ's firearm laws, and the allegations more laws are watered down," are made by individuals with no concept of what the existing laws are. I'm speaking in particular of legislators and putative legislators (like Mark Alexander, and I will stand by my foregoing comments about his integrity and sincerity). So many of the legislators and the …   more ›

Clifton Councilman Calls for Alexander, Sen. Gill to Debate [Poll]

Do you want to see your Democratic state Senate candidates debate the issues? Vote now in Montclair Patch's poll.

The following press release was submitted by Mark Alexander, of Montclair. He is a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama and current Democratic candidate for the New Jersey state Senate in the 34th District.  Clifton Councilman Matt Ward is calling on Sen. Nia Gill (D-Essex) to debate challenger Mark Alexander in Clifton prior to the June 4 Democratic Primary for the 34th District's state Senate seat.  As the largest community in the 34 District, and one of the biggest cities in New Jersey, Clifton deserves an opportunity to meet the candidates running to represent them in the New Jersey State Senate and hear where they stand on the important issues being debated in Trenton, said Ward. “Those running for the State Legislature …

Public Ed. in New Jersey Must Be Fixed [Op-Ed]

Education is the silver bullet to so many societal ills, said Mark Alexander, seeking the Democratic nomination in the 34th District state Senate primary in June.

The following letter was written by Mark Alexander, of Montclair. He is a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama and current Democratic candidate for the New Jersey state Senate in the 34th District.  As a teacher with four children in the public schools, strengthening our schools to provide a quality education for all our children is important to me on a very personal level. In order for New Jersey to be competitive, we need strong public schools in all corners of our state. Education is the silver bullet to so many societal ills. My campaign for the New Jersey state Senate has attracted parents and educators who also share a commitment to our schools. Last week, Bishop Dr. Reginald T. Jackson endorsed my campaign stating: "As an…

Alexander Endorsed by Bishop Reginald Jackson

Mark Alexander is challenging state Sen. Nia Gill (D-Essex) in 34th District Democratic Primary on June 4.

Bishop Dr. Reginald T. Jackson announced his endorsement of Mark Alexander this week in the 34th District Democratic Primary on June 4. Jackson is the 132nd elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the Executive Director of the Black Ministers’ Council, representing more than 600 African American churches in New Jersey. He is a civil rights leader who fought to end racial profiling by the New Jersey State Police and is a driving force in reforming urban and first-ring suburban school districts. “I am endorsing Mark Alexander for the New Jersey State Senate because we need energized, independent leaders who can fight for our children and make our State a more fair and just place,” said Jackson in a press …

Alexander Calls on Sen. Gill to Debate the Issues [Opinion]

Mark Alexander, challenging Nia Gill (34-Essex) for her state Senate seat, calls on her join him in a series of debates across Clifton, East Orange, Montclair and Orange.

The following letter was written by Mark Alexander, of Montclair. He is a former senior adviser to President Barack Obama and current candidate for the New Jersey State Senate in the 34th District.  I always believed in the power of normal people to make positive change through the political process. I know that our government can be a powerful force to help the most vulnerable among us, to lift up our children with quality educations, and to provide an engine that can create jobs and drive our economy. When I launched my campaign last July, I wanted to empower people, just as we did when I helped build the Obama campaign. From the ground up, one person at a time, one door at a time, one vote at a time. My campaign is about the working …

Early Voting Reform Needed Now [Op-Ed]

State Sen. Nia H. Gill (D-Essex) sponsor's legislation to establish statewide early voting that would give residents the ability to vote in person prior to Election Day.

State Sen. Nia H. Gill (D-Essex) is a Montclair resident representing the 34th District. She chairs the Senate Commerce Committee and serves as Senate President Pro Tempore. In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama stood before the country and called for voting reform. In doing so, the president spoke of the problems that plagued the nation’s voting system on Election Day 2012, including lines that snaked around the block at polling places in states like Florida, where a 102-year-old woman was told she would have to wait six hours before casting her vote.  The truth is, there are few rights that are more important than a citizen’s participation in democracy.   We witness this right in nations throughout the world where …

S2364 does not address voter apathy. Perhaps people simply feel that their individual vote does not really matter. Montclair is a good example: Many people see their participation in the "town's demoncracy" as limited to the voting booth and giving authority to others. Afterwards you end up with a Town Council that ignores the town's people, does not include the residents in local decision-making…   more ›

State Senate Challenger Endorsed By Former NJ Attorney General

Mark Alexander, of Montclair, is running for state Senate and seeking the Democratic party's endorsement in the primary.

Recently, former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey endorsed state Senate candidate Mark Alexander in the 34th District Democratic Primary. Harvey was the first African-American Attorney General in New Jersey when he was appointed to the post in 2003, and served as a first assistant in the U.S. Attorney’s Office and as chairman of the cabinet-level New Jersey Domestic Security Preparedness Task Force. “Mark Alexander is the best choice in the 34th District because of his independence, credentials, and work in the community,” said Harvey. “As a former Senior Advisor to President Obama, I know Mark can bring fresh ideas to break up the status quo in Trenton and get things done for working families in New Jersey.” As attorney …

Montclair's Mark Alexander Seeks NJ Senate Seat

Alexander will face off against incumbent Nia Gill (D-Montclair) in the Democratic primary.

A Montclair resident will challenge a longtime Democratic incumbent for her New Jersey Senate seat this year.  Mark Alexander will go head to head against Nia Gill (D-Montclair) in June’s Democratic primary for the state’s 34th District Senate seat. Alexander, a Seton Hall University law professor, said he will be looking to inject a new and independent voice on property taxes, transportation and equality issues -- such as same-sex marriage.   “You can’t ask the same people to fix the problem when they haven’t done it year after year,” said Alexander. “The entrenched incumbency is not moving things forward.”  Alexander moved to Montclair in 1995 when he began teaching law at Seton Hall University. His four of his five children currently …

I'm not happy with Gill, and Alexander doesn't make me feel any better. Both are tax and spend big government liberals who only add to the problems we face in NJ. Alexander's quote towards the end of the article, regarding school teachers. shows he's well versed on Democrat talking points. The Governor's "chastising and demonizing" is towards the teachers union, not teachers.   more ›
