'Inside Montclair' looks at Steven Langehough's latest exhibition at Gallery 51.
May in Montclair is alive with music and art. In the latest installment of "Inside Montclair," Wayne Robbins drops by local artist Steven Langehough's show " Spirit Mappings " being exhibited at Gallery 51 on Church Street. This new body of work of enamel paint on hard board, said Langehough, was "inspired by the topography and maps of the Quetico Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota and reference my experiences in the wilderness." Langehough received his MFA from Cranbrook Art Academy and he is currently the registrar at Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York. The exhibition runs until June 22.

“I really think this is going to be the arts, jazz mecca not only for Montclair but the entire region” said Montclair Mayor Robert Jackson at the opening of Jazz House Kids, at 347 Bloomfield Ave.
A former billiards hall on Bloomfield Avenue will now be an incubator for the future sounds of jazz. Jazz House Kids, a Montclair-based nonprofit which teaches musical education, is celebrating its 10th anniversary by moving to a new location at 347 Bloomfield Ave. Local, county and state officials joined former and current students Friday for a ribbon cutting to officially open the office and studio. “This has been one long journey,” said Founder and Executive Director Melissa Walker at the ribbon cutting on Friday to a large crowd, which included Rep. Donald Payne (D-10), state Sen. Nia Gill (D-Essex), Assemblyman Thomas Giblin (D-Montclair), and members of the Montclair Council. “We are finally at our own ... jazz house,” said Fred …

The museum is currently collecting utensils to be used in an upcoming exhibit.
Utensils can be used for more than just eating -- at least that’s what the Montclair Art Museum believes. Instead of relegating flatware to the world of domesticity and kitchen tables, the museum is preparing to use forks, spoons, knives and more for a sculpture that will grace the museum’s collection. The sculpture will be created by Jean Shin, a contemporary artist based in Brooklyn, N.Y. “I thought she would be a great fit for us,” said Alexandra Schwartz, curator of contemporary art at the museum. Schwartz said Shin will melt down the donated flatware and forge it into a tree sculpture, which is expected to be presented in September 2013. The sculpture will play on Montclair’s abundance of foliage and stately trees, and include …

Gene Phipps Jr. is the saxophonist who fills Montclair's most popular street with tunes throughout the week.
Meet the sound of Church Street. During these cooling autumn days, Gene Phipps Jr. is the man who fills Montclair's busy city center with the tenor of his saxophone. Restaurant-goers and passersby can see him throughout the week at lunchtime sitting on his favorite bench in front of Raymond’s Restaurant. “This is what I do,” said Phipps. “I play music.” Phipps is a Montclair native, but went to school in East Orange and eventually became a music teacher in Newark schools. Playing both the saxophone and flute also propelled Phipps to venues in New York City, including the Village Vanguard, and Europe with innumerable different jazz musicians throughout his life. Now, at 63, he is retired. When Phipps is not playing his saxophone on …

School of Rock Montclair will present two themed concerts this weekend: a tribute to the music of Woodstock and a tribute to the album “Tragic Kingdom” by No Doubt Each of these two-hour shows will feature students in School of Rock Montclair’s Performance Program, who have been rehearsing their repertoires since July. “Even though our students—and even some of their parents!—weren’t born when Woodstock happened, they know the importance of the incredible music that was performed at the event,” says Phil Silverberg, general manager of School of Rock Montclair. “They also have a current connection with No Doubt’s landmark 1995 album ‘Tragic Kingdom’, which is still fresh and relevant today. Both shows will be packed with energy and …

The movie starring Janeane Garofalo has all sorts of New Jersey connections.
If you were walking by the Bellevue Theater on Wednesday night, you would have noticed a whole host of stars gathered outside for the Montclair Film Festival's sold-out premiere of "Bad Parents." The movie has loads of New Jersey connections. Not only does it star Janeane Garofalo, who grew up in Madison, but it also features Morristown resident Ben Bailey, an Emmy Award-winning comedian. The film also was filmed in Bergen and Passaic counties. "Bad Parents," based on the award-winning stage play “It’s All About the Kids” by writer/director/producer and New Jersey resident Caytha Jentis, is a snarky satirical comedy about sports parents behaving badly. Garofalo plays Kathy, a suburban every-mom who finds herself sucked through the rabbit…
