Legislators get tour of Shore destruction

  Members of New Jersey's General Assembly toured Ocean County communities devastated by Superstorm Sandy Thursday. The tour, led by State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes, along with local officials, gave lawmakers and members of the press an up-close look at what Sandy left behind – including the remnants of the Seaside Heights boardwalk and the now-iconic Jet Star roller coaster, which dropped from Casino Pier to the ocean during the storm. Casino Pier will be repaired in what is estimated to be a $45 million project, Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd said, and the roller coaster will be removed from the ocean floor. What to do at the beach this weekend.

Rain could put a damper on beach plans for one of the last summer weekends but that doesn't mean there isn't still plenty to do down the Shore: New Jersey native and teen pop star Joe Jonas will perform free in Seaside Heights at noon Friday on Carteret Avenue. The member of the Jonas Brothers will debut his new song "See No More" as part of a live broadcast on B98.5 FM. While anyone can head to Carteret Avenue, beach badge rates still apply for those who'd like to listen from the beach. Antique autos will roll through Wall Township Sunday for the 16th annual Rolling Antique Iron Show, slated to start at 8:30 a.m. at Allaire Village. Cars from the early 20th century are expected, with trophies to be awarded. Asbury Park's Convention Hall, 1300 Ocean Ave., will open its doors to the Murder Beach Militia vs. the Right Coast Rollers in a roller derby smackdown that will help determine which group of hard-hitting girls make it to the Jersey Shore Roller Girls championship this fall.
