Black Friday Tradition Changes in North Jersey

Earlier and staggered store openings result in shorter lines, less frenzy the day after Thanksgiving.

Varied opening and sale times at retailers for the Black Friday rush seemed to spread out shoppers throughout North Jersey’s biggest stores this weekend. This year marked a new marketing tactic—more retailers opened Thanksgiving night. While some stores bought into the new trend, others stuck to the traditional early-morning opening times Friday, while others chose to open at 7 or 8 a.m. And, the different opening times gave shoppers a lot of options, and the ability to hit multiple stores. Black Friday Remains Slow on Bloomfield Ave

Shoppers and owners look forward to Small Business Saturday.

Shoppers are enthusiastic while business owners remain hopeful that Small Business Saturday will make up for Black Friday. “Everyone is going to the malls which hurts the town a little bit,” said Carl Nozdrovicky, owner of Caldwell Jewelers on Bloomfield Ave. “There aren't as many retail shops as there used to be in Caldwell but now people are more aware of Small Business Saturday.” Some loyal shoppers remained on Bloomfield Avenue Friday morning to get a head start on their holiday shopping. Gabriella Stiefbold of Verona was picking up some items at Learning Express Toys on Bloomfield Ave. By Friday afternoon she had been shopping for nearly 12 …

Black Friday Lines Diminish After Daybreak

Willowbrook frenzy fades early Friday morning.

Willowbrook Mall at 6 a.m. was almost quiet. Many of the overnight bargain hunters had gone home or to the next site. Black Friday shoppers had waited for hours late Thanksgiving night for the mall's opening at midnight.

Black Friday Crowds Steady at Short Hills, Livingston

Essex County malls busy, but not overcrowded most of the day.

Essex County's two malls—Short Hills and Livingston—had a steady stream of shoppers throughout Black Friday. However, staggered store openings helped to keep the lines to a minimum Friday morning in Short Hills. By the early afternoon, Livingston was busy, but not overcrowded.

'Black Friday Creep' Spurs Online Petition Drives to Save Thanksgiving

Thousands are signing an online petitions against Black Friday store opening hours that have been pushed into Thanksgiving Day.

The original petition was reportedly created by a Target employee upset that the retail giant is opening on Thanksgiving and requiring employees to work instead of spending time with their families. Target stores will open their doors at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
