One of the Jersey Shore's most iconic musicians will be honored annually with a day named after him. Every Jan. 11 will now be Clarence Clemons Day. The state Senate last week passed a resolution sponsored by Senator Jennifer Beck (R-11) that memorializes the legendary saxophonist from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. Clemons died last year at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke. “The New Jersey Shore would not be the same without the music of Bruce Spingsteen’s E-Street Band,” said Beck. “And the E-Street Band would not have been the same without the sound of a saxophone played by Clarence Clemons. Three of Palmyra resident Frank Stefanko's photos of Bruce Springsteen appear in a revealing new biography about the Boss.
Getting at what drives Bruce Springsteen has never been easy. But, a new biography by author Peter Ames Carlin digs as deep into the Boss’ psyche as any previous book has. Bruce, published Oct. 30 by Simon & Schuster, is already on the New York Times bestseller list. The 494-page book, written with Springsteen’s cooperation, has a South Jersey connection. Palmyra resident Frank Stefanko shot three of the photos used in the book. Two of the pictures were shot at the former Shellow’s Luncheonette in East Camden in 1978. One shows Springsteen playing pinball as members of the E Street Band watch. The other is a group shot, with the entire band jammed around a booth. The one-hour telethon will feature superstar celebrities, including Bruce Springsteen and Sting.
Americans are used to watching telethons for desperate and needy people around the globe. On Friday, a one-hour live benefit telethon featuring superstar guests will raise money for an issue close to home: the victims of Superstorm Sandy. Christina Aguilera, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Sting headline the event. “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together" airs from 8 to 9 p.m. on NBCUniversal networks. The Huffington Post reports that money raised will go to the Red Cross to help survivors with the baiscs—medical care, shelter, food. Bruce Springsteen will join the campaign trail Thursday for President Obama in Northeast Ohio and Iowa. The Boss will team up with former President Bill Clinton in Parma, Ohio then head on to Ames, Iowa later on that Thursday for another campaign concert and rally, according to Springsteen's website. The governor apparently nodded off during a Bruce Springsteen concert in New York City.
Bruce Springsteen's high-energy shows are known to inspire fervor in his audiences. But, apparenty Gov. Christopher J. Christie was running a little low on energy at a recent concert by The Boss at Madison Square Garden in New York City, according to a report on The Huffington Post. A fan sent in a photo of Christie resting his head in his hand, apparently napping during the show, the New York Post reports. The governor is a longtime fan of The Boss. Last month Christie attended what he said was his 127th Springsteen concert, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Local Bruce Springsteen fans know that when they attend a show in Asbury Park, no matter who is headlining the event, there's a chance Bruce will pop in for a song. What they probably don't know is that this winter Springsteen and his crew spent their days practicing at the Expo Theater inside Fort Monmouth in a quiet section of Oceanport. Closed as a military installation since September, the place is a bit of a ghost town. On most days, security personnel outnumber the investors who have been looking over the U.S. Army property, now up for sale and development. Photos of Bruce Springsteen taken by Palmyra resident Frank Stefanko are part of a new exhibit about the singer at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
Frank Stefanko and The Boss are meeting across the river. Stefanko, a Palmyra resident, shot the covers for Bruce Springsteen's albums Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River. Both cover photos were taken in Haddonfield in the late 1970s. A handful of the pictures Stefanko shot of Springsteen during that period are part of a major new exhibit opening Friday, Feb. 17 at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. The exhibit, From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen, was previously on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. The exhibit, which runs through Sept. 3 at the Constitution Center, contains more than 150 pieces from Springsteen's career. The items on …
