Montclair Lights Candles For Newtown

Anonymous residents donate $10,000 for gun buy-back in Montclair.

Residents lit candles on Church Street yesterday for those killed in the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., and called for stricter gun regulation in America.   Nearly 100 residents gathered on Church Street at the six corners yesterday to mourn the 20 children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School last week.  The gathering was both a vigil and rally. Candles glowed in the hands of residents in cold winter night to remember the dead. Many others also held signs with bold letters saying, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!” and called on their representatives at the state and federal level to put in place stricter gun laws.  “We have to be stronger than the [National Rifle Association], and push them out of the way,” said Co-chair of the …

Opinion: Montclair Mayor Should Stand with Coalition Against Guns

Resident Melina Macall writes a letter in response to the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., calling for Montclair to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

To the Editor,  As a parent and citizen I am doing everything in my power to reduce the number of guns on the streets. I was deeply disappointed to note that Montclair Mayor Robert Jackson is not part of the coalition of Mayors nationwide supporting effective gun laws.  Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a bipartisan coalition of more than 725 mayors –representing 57 million Americans – who support common-sense gun laws. I ask you to join this coalition as a priority and to share this information with our town so that we citizens can come out behind you and speak up for stronger gun control. For every day that nothing changes, 34 people are murdered by gunshot. Melina Macall Montclair

Melina, have you received a reply? I sent a letter to the mayor via email on Tuesday. Haven't heard back. Would the editor at Patch be able to follow up on this with Mayor Jackson? To ask if he intends to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns? Thank you.   more ›

Student Safety 'Highest Priority,' Says Superintendent

New Montclair District Superintendent Penny MacCormack releases statement following school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Superintendent of Montclair Schools Penny MacCormack recently released the following statement regarding school safety in the district.  The press release comes days after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., which left 20 children and seven adults dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The Montclair Public Schools district takes the security and safety of our children very seriously.   The district has security procedures in place for all schools – schools are locked, unauthorized visitors are restricted and safety procedures are routinely practiced.  I have been in contact with the Montclair Police Department to affirm that the district and the police department have a coordinated approach to school safety and are working together …

West Essex Couple Attended Holiday Show at Sandy Hook Night Before Shooting

Roseland family directly impacted by shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Dennis and Conni Murray, longtime residents of Roseland, learned about Friday’s massacre in Newtown, Conn. the same way most Americans did -- on the news. Only the Murrays were one of several hundred people who attended Sandy Hook Elementary School’s fourth grade holiday show Thursday, the night before alleged gunman Adam Lanza took the lives of 20 children and six adults at the school as well as his own. The Murrays had traveled to Newtown to see their grandson, 10-year-old Brendan, perform at a local high school.  “We met the principal who was killed,” Conni Murray said, “and the vice principal who was shot.” Dennis Murray learned about the unfolding tragedy around 9:45 a.m. Friday when he received a CNN alert on his cell phone about a…
