More than 500 Montclair residents applied for federal aid after Hurricane Sandy damaged their homes and apartments in October, according to figures recently released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Homeowners There were 165 residents in Montclair (07042) who applied for aid. The average FEMA inspected damage for these homes was $1,675. Of these homes, 42 reported damage of up to $10,000, one reported damage between $10,000 and $20,000, and one reported damage between $20,000 and $30,000. Ten-term Congressman Rodney P. Frelinghuysen (R-11) addressed students at Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston on Wednesday, reiterating his support for Israel and defending Congressional spending. Frelinghuysen serves the newly-redistricted eleventh district, which includes 54 municipalities including communities in Morris, Sussex, Passaic, and Essex counties — including Montclair. Frelinghuysen told students that he spends weeks in Washington D.C., and weekends in New Jersey, traveling throughout his district. If the Montclair Council had its way, the township would take control of the former Social Security Administration Office itself which has sat vacant for nearly a year. On Tuesday, the council unanimously voted that the township is interested in acquiring the federal property located at 396 Bloomfield Ave. “... Nine groups presented how they could use federal funding to provide additional education, outreach and networking opportunities to low- to moderate-income residents in Montclair.
Federal funding is up for grabs, and qualifying organizations presented their cases for why they deserve a piece of that pie on Tuesday night. Nine Montclair groups are asking for $515,000 in federal grants to help benefit low- and moderate-income residents in the areas of education, outreach, networking and infrastructure. At the Montclair Council conference on Tuesday, the organizations presented their project ideas to the council. The council will prioritize the projects, and determine how best to distribute funds.
