Theresa Loong will talk about her father's story of being a Malaysian-born Royal Air Force veteran who became a prisoner-of-war in Japan and eventually ended up in a New Jersey suburb.
A documentary filmmaker will talk about her film being shown at the Montclair Film Festival on May 4. Theresa Loong, who directed "Every Day Is a Holiday," will talk about her father's story of being a Malaysian-born Royal Air Force veteran who became a prisoner-of-war in Japan and eventually ended up in a New Jersey suburb. Loong was able to pry the full story from her father Dr. Paul Loong after discovering the wartime diary he'd kept secret — first from his Japanese captors, then his family — for over 60 years. Theresa's questions grew into her documentary "Every Day Is a Holiday," which is a title taken from a diary entry during a bleak time in her father's imprisonment when he swore that if he survived as a free man, "Every day …

South Orange Public Library hosts the 32nd annual Black Maria Film Festival at the South Orange Public Library on Tuesday evening, April 16, at 7 p.m. The program will consist of award-winning works selected from this year’s festival by some of the nation’s most prominent cutting-edge filmmakers, including the wonderful works of local filmmakers, Gerard Amsellem, Phil Weisman, and Emily Hubley. 'We thought and hoped they would come out and rally around a film festival, and they really did,' said Chairman of the festival’s board Robert Feinberg.
It’s showtime for the Montclair Film Festival. This lineup for the second Montclair Film Festival was announced today and will feature more than 80 films and events — nearly doubling the first year’s total. “Last year was our first year and the big discovery for us was our audience demand exceeded our ticket supply ... which was a good problem to have!” said Artistic Director Thomas Powers. “This year we addressed the problem by expanding our offerings.” The festival, which runs from April 29 through May 5, has added two theater venues this year and about 5,000 seats. A free screening of "The Iran Job" will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Montclair State University. The screening of this internationally-praised documentary follows the story of Kevin Sheppard, an American athlete who travels to Iran to play professional basketball. Cinephiles and movie lovers of all ages can kickoff Oscar Sunday with an all day showing of the long shots in the 85th Academy Awards. Montclair students show off their Claymation camp masterpieces at a film festival Friday night.
Remember Gumby and Pokey? Mr. Bill and Sluggo? The next set of Claymation stars is coming to Montclair this week. Claymation is still alive in Montclair. For the last six years, @the Art Studio/StudioKids Art, located at 211 Glenridge Avenue, has been a local epicenter of Claymation movies and stop motion photography. Students from the Claymation Week of Art Camp will present their five short films this Friday night, August 17, 2012 at 7:00 P.M. “It’s absolutely thrilling to have kids host this event here at the studio.
