One firefighter was injured during the blaze, but no other injuries were reported.
More than a dozen tenants are still displaced after a fire tore through an apartment building this weekend. The fire began around 7 p.m. Sunday in a two-story apartment building at 15 Forest St. The third-degree fire began in a second-floor apartment in the rear of the building. Smoke could be seen and smelled for blocks while the fire burned that night. "It was a labor-intensive fire," said Montclair Fire Department Chief Kevin Allen on Tuesday. "It was a lot of work and they did a great job." The fire is not considered suspicious at this time, said Allen. Investigation revealed the accidental fire was caused by a tenant burning incense. By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the fire was well developed, said Allen. Flames …

No injuries reported in Sunday evening blaze that leaves complex uninhabitable.
A fire erupted in a two-story Forest Street apartment building shortly before sunset Sunday, displacing more than a dozen tenants for the night. Eye witnesses said flames as high as 15 feet could be seen rising from the rear of a second-story apartment window around 7 p.m. and grey smoke could be seen billowing into the air from Bloomfield Avenue from the building at 15 Forest St. No injuries were reported. “Flames were on both sides of the building,” said tenant Nikki Abdulai, who recently moved into the apartment building. Abdulai said she was in her first-story apartment when the fire began. She said she smelled smoke and then the fire alarm went off. That’s when she and other tenants ran outside and saw the fire in the rear of the …

A white, four-door Lincoln model Town & Country sent billowing smoke into the air around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
A taxicab erupted into flames Tuesday afternoon when electrical wires under the car began to spark, but caused no injuries or damage to surrounding buildings, Montclair fire officials said. The white four-door Lincoln Town & Country was parked in front of the Pig & Prince Restaurant, at 1 Lackawanna Plaza on the corner of Bloomfield Avenue, when the fire started at approximately 4:48 p.m., fire officials said. The taxicab driver reportedly saw the sparks and called police. However, when fire crews arrived to douse the flames, billowing smoke could be seen rising from the car. Two engines, one truck and another vehicle from the fire department responded to the scene and quickly put out the blaze. The taxicab was towed and street reopened…

The Montclair Fire Department reminds everyone to remove all snow covering fire hydrants.
Winter snowstorms create a special concern for the Montclair Fire Department as fire hydrants can be buried under large amounts of snow, making them difficult to find quickly. While the snow is still piled high, be sure to remove any snow still covering fire hydrants. The fire department asks residents and business owners to help keep their neighborhood fire hydrants cleared so that in the event of a fire, firefighters don't lose time locating and shoveling them out before being able to hook up to them. Time lost could mean all the difference in an emergency. Firefighters need a three-foot clearance on all sides of the hydrant. Help your fire department and your neighbors by ensuring that the hydrant in your area is readily visible and …

'The fire just roared,' said an eyewitness. 'It was like sparklers or fireworks.'
[Updated: Thursday at 6 p.m.] When Jason Uechi looked out from his living room window onto Willowdale Avenue shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, the last thing he expected to see was a small yellow school bus engulfed in flames and billowing smoke. But that's exactly what he saw. Uechi said he saw a “huge amount of black smoke” emanating from the front end and roof of the bus. "The fire just roared," said Uechi. "It was like sparklers or fireworks." Acting Battalion Chief James Ormsby said two Montclair Fire Department fire engines and other vehicles responded to the scene. The fire was "fully involved" by the time the department arrived, said Ormsby, with flames reaching high enough to melt electrical wires above it. No residents on the …

The second-floor and attic windows could be seen broken out and blackened.
A fire broke out in two-story home on Llewellyn Road early Saturday evening. At about 5 p.m., at least three Montclair Fire Department fire engines and several emergency vehicles rushed to extinguish a fire on Llewellyn Road. Police and fire departments had the street cordoned off between Clinton and South Mountain avenues. A fire engine's ladder could be seen extended from the street to the second-floor and attic windows of the home. The windows, which faced the street, were broken and blackened. Neighbors crowded outside of their homes and stood in the sidewalks to witness the fire department extinguish the flames. It could not be verified if anyone was home or injured at the time this article was posted. More information will be…

No one was injured in the blaze.
Dozens of firefighters converged on the scene of a mid-morning fire that badly damaged the home at 83 Wildwood Ave,, just two houses down from Grove Street. A neighbor said that the residents, a woman and her college-aged daughter, were home when the fire started but escaped uninjured. "I heard screaming and I looked out and there was smoke coming out of the upstairs bedroom window," said Yolanda Burmudez. "The people have dogs that also got out. It looks like it's just the top floor. "I can't imagine what it must be like to see your house destroyed but it seems as though it's just the upstairs bedroom and attic area," she added. Investigators at the scene declined to offer more details about the incident except to say that the family is…

Friends gathering support for Kiersten Parks who suffered burns over 70% of her body from a fire in her apartment.
A young woman from Caldwell who was seriously burned after an explosion in her bedroom Tuesday morning is in stable condition but faces a long road to recovery, according to her mother, Paula Parks of Matawan. Kiersten Parks, 21, was in her bed on Tuesday morning when fire officials say a lit candle fell over and ignited her bedding. As a result of the fire and heat, an aerosol can of hairspray in the room exploded, blowing out a double window of the second story unit at Parkway East Apartments. The fire has been ruled accidental, Caldwell Fire Chief Gary Garamella said Friday. Parks managed to escape to a neighbor’s apartment and was rushed to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston where she has remained all week. Her mother Paula …

JohnQ, No. The reason to turn part of Nishuane Park into a pumping station is to supply more gallons of water in order to support an expansion of Montclair's population by 1/3. There is no need to build a well in Nishuane Park to ensure the proper amount of pressure in fire hydrants. Old pipes should be replaced and inline technology used to ensure constant and maximum pressure when needed. "…   more ›
