Join us at March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser, and the oldest and best-loved walking event. It’s a family-friendly event where the community comes together to raise money to support research, services, education and advocacy in the fight against prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality. When you walk, you give hope to the babies born too soon or sick. The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies, and it funds research to find answers to the serious problems that threaten our babies. We've been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible $2.6 billion! Join the more than 7 million people who participate, donate and/or sponsor. Register to walk at …

Do the math and save lives. Students at Renaissance at Rand Middle School will be sharpening their pencils in order to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with the school's Math-A-Thon. The funds raised during the annual event will help St. Jude to continue its mission of finding cures and saving children stricken with catastrophic diseases. This is another installment of the Montclair Public Library's essay series, "My First Chapter." The essays are written by literary figures or local residents, and accompany the library's annual fundraiser. This week's installment features Montclair Mayor Robert Jackson. The Montclair Public Library and I have a wonderful, lifelong relationship and that relationship has brought me untold hours of joy, enlightenment and inspiration. In my youth, it was my homework center and the place that I could while away the hours during the summer in a comfortable chair with a great book. The librarians “adopted" me and ensured that a healthy supply of the history books that I loved were on hand. During the summers, the library was a home away from…

This is another installment of the Montclair Public Library's essay series, "My First Chapter." The essays are written by literary figures, and accompany the library's annual fundraiser. This week, Dorothea Benton Frank talks about Sullivan's Island Library and the bookmobile. When I was a very young girl there was no air conditioning in our home on Sullivan’s Island, S.C. Now, you may have never heard of Sullivan’s Island, but it is said by learned folks across the land that during the month of August the only thing that separates the island from the bottom floor of Hades is a screened door. It’s that hot. Many summer days are well over 100 degrees and the air is so thick you can practically swim from room to room. We lived a small …

This is another installment of the Montclair Public Library's essay series, "My First Chapter." The essays are written by literary figures, and accompany the library's annual fundraiser. The following letter was written by Ian Frazier, an author and staff writer for The New Yorker. In Hudson, Ohio, where I grew up, our public library consisted of two frontier Greek revival houses that had been joined together, and you entered through the front door of one house or the other. The levels of the houses didn’t exactly match, so in certain rooms and hallways you had to navigate small sets of stairs, and the houses sat at a skewed angle to each other, so you were always walking around odd corners. If a library is a physical metaphor for the…
