Montclair Kimberley Academy plans to demolish the 19th-century home on Upper Mountain Avenue, which is being opposed by residents and local and state historic councils.
The scheduled razing of a historically-designated home on Upper Mountain Avenue is raising opposition from residents and local and state historic councils who are asking how it came to pass. Montclair Kimberley Academy received variance approval from Montclair’s Zoning Board on Nov. 14 to demolish the 19th-century carriage house on the school's Muenster Field, located at 40 Upper Mountain Ave. The destruction of the home will make way for a new and larger field house, turf field and parking lot. This is completely speculative. There is no evidence that there was ever a mansion there that MKA tore down, or that it was "historic". What we know is that there is a broken-down carriage house on an MKA owned property that was never officially deemed to be a historic property, and everyone claiming this house to be historic has no reasoning behind these claims (except, I suppose, that it's old…   more ›
