In the decades Nutley and Belleville have held their joint Columbus Day parade, organizers have never skimped on the spectacle. And this year’s celebration of Italian heritage, scheduled for this Sunday, won’t be any different. Among the attractions will be a working calliope, a dancing “Super Mario” and -- yes -- a gondolier. On roller skates, no less. “What I did was I made a gondolier costume, with a boat about seven feet long,” Mike Perrone, a Belleville businessman and one of the parade organizers. “Then somebody suggested the person go on roller skates. It was supposed to be like a clown thing, comical.” But when Perrone and others actually saw their skater in action, gliding along to “O Sole Mio,” they were more moved than amused…

An interview with Maplewood reporter Tina Kelley, author of "Almost Home."
Almost Home: Helping Kids Move from Homelessness to Hope, written by former journalist Tina Kelley and Kevin Ryan, president of Covenant House, tells the stories of six homeless teenagers as they cope with living alone on the streets. Patch interviewed Kelley, a former New York Times reporter who was editor of The Local. She will be reading from the book at Words Bookstore on Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m., and at Maplewood Memorial Library on Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m. All author proceeds from the book go to support kids who benefit from Covenant House shelters and outreach programs. South Orange doula Kim Collins tells viewers what to look for in the new PBS series
As the new PBS drama "Call the Midwife" opens, nurse/midwife Jenny Lee arrives in 1950s East London to deliver babies, some 150 each month, nearly all at home. That, says Kim Collins, is just one difference between then and now. "Call the Midwife" has an all-star cast, including Vanessa Redgrave and comedian Miranda Hart in her first dramatic role. Collins is a doula and a childbirth educator, who supports women and their families through pregnancy, birth, and the weeks afterward. Having attended hundreds of births, she agrees with writer Jennifer Worth (no relation to this writer) who penned the memoir behind the new series. Worth was inspired to tell her story when she noticed the growing number of medical dramas that focus on doctors…

Ann Brown's youngest daughter, Elke, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 2 1/2 and now attends Bradford Elementary School.
Montclair mother Ann Brown says that, after her youngest daughter, Elke, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 2 1/2, she endured more than two grueling years of chemotherapy treatment before attaining long-term remission. Elke is now a first grader at Bradford Elementary School with siblings at Mount Hebron Middle School and Montclair High School. Today, Brown says her desire is to create more awareness of children's cancer and more funding for research, which is why she wants everyone to know about the second annual North Jersey CureSearch Walk for Children's Cancer taking place Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. in Verona Park. "During Elke's treatment, the support we received from the Montclair community was overwhelming," Brown said. "So…

More than 300 runners are expected to come together on Sunday, October 7, for the first annual Douglas Williams Memorial 5000 Meter Run, which will begin and end at the Montclair Art Museum. Within blocks of reaching his home, Williams was suddenly struck by a passing car, which sped away and left his body on the side of the road. The driver of that car did not stop. Hours later, when he was found, Williams was pronounced dead. To date, that driver has not come forward or been found.
