College Scorecard Reports 'Misleading' Tuition Cost Increases, MSU Says

Montclair State University says its costs have only risen 9.7 percent, compared to the federal government's estimates of about 35 percent in recent years.

Montclair State University is contending the increases in tuition costs at the school reported in a new federal database are “misleading.” The College Scorecard, an interactive database released Wednesday by the Department of Education, claims Montclair State’s tuition costs have skyrocketed 34.5 percent between 2007 and 2009 — one of the highest increases compared to similar schools.  However, Montclair State issued a statement Friday questioning the federal government’s calculations. "The Federal College Scorecard released by the U.S. Department of Education on February 13, 2013 presents inaccurate information about Montclair State University," wrote the university in an email.  The university is arguing actual costs have only risen 9.…

Why isn't MSU providing increase in costs between 2007-2009 for period the gov't reported on? Seems too convenient to pick 2008-2010 and say costs only increased 10%. The rationale may make sense but if the reported costs are not accurate, report what they were for 2007-2009 then, don't arbitrarily pick a time period when they were clearly less.   more ›

The average tuition cost has increased 34.5 percent from 2007 to 2009 for MSU, which is the highest among similar institutions, according to the federal College Scorecard.

The rankings are in for Montclair State University. A new interactive College Scorecard was released Wednesday by the Obama administration which offers students and parents basic information about a college. The website quickly offers information regarding a school’s graduation rates, tuition costs, average borrowing rates and employment history of former graduates. So what does the new scorecard say about Montclair State? Here’s a quick rundown:  The new College Scorecard was announced by President Barack Obama during his State of the Union address to the joint session of Congress on Tuesday.  “... Parents and students can use [the new scorecard],” said Obama, “to compare schools based on a simple criteria: Where you can get the most …

Montclair State Reverses Student's Suspension Over Online Fat Jokes

Joseph Aziz, a 26-year-old student from Weehawken, expects to work with the university to take classes in the spring semester.

Montclair State University rescinded a suspension Thursday it had handed down to a male student who made fat jokes about a female student on social media websites.   Joseph Aziz, a 26-year-old student from Weehawken, began serving his semester-long suspension on Jan. 2 for violating the university’s No-Contact Order with a female student whom he had made comments about online. But on Thursday, Montclair State President Susan Cole revoked the suspension.   “While Montclair State should never have issued its unconstitutional gag order in the first place, we commend President Cole for acting swiftly to end the situation once it became public,” wrote Foundation of Individual Rights in Education Vice President Robert Shibley, which is a …

Has anyone heard of shunning? It can work pretty well. Frankly, if I were hiring, I would pass over this guy.... Also, I wonder if MSU has the resources to treat this 26 year old jerk by OFFERING (not mandating) counseling; also, maybe an opportunity for reconciliation with the young lady....   more ›
