MSU Prof Helps Calm Four Cicada Fears

Millions of cicadas are about to invade New Jersey. So what's there to be afraid of?

With millions of cicadas about to surface the earth in North Jersey in the coming weeks, some of us may be feeling a bit anxious about this summer’s uninvited visitors. After all, it’s been 17 years since Brood II periodic cicadas made their last appearance — and who really remembers the summer of 1996? Montclair State University Associate Professor of Biology and Molecular Biology, Scott Kight, can help put those fears to rest. Kight, an evolutionary biologist who specializes in insect reproductive behavior, says although the insects may spoil a picnic or two this summer, for the most part we should sit back and enjoy the long-anticipated show. “It’s a gift, if you will, from nature that we live in a place where something so unusual can …

How to Talk to Your Kids About the Boston Marathon Bombings

A Montclair State University professor offers advice to parents for how to talk about the bombings.

The Boston Marathon bombings is an event that can be exceptionally difficult for children to understand. With news agencies running images and coverage nonstop, children and teens are easily influenced and can take in the wrong information. To help parents discuss the bombings with their children, Dr. Gerard Costa, director of Montclair State University's Center for Autism and Early Childhood Mental Health, offers these tips.  • Events like the Boston Marathon bombings can lead adults to become more anxious and vigilant, and these feelings can be transmitted to infants and children through gestures, pacing, interactions and words.  Adults need to monitor their own states and help children to feel safe.  If a parent is too anxious or …

MSU Biologist Designs Device to Remove Ship Organisms

Tool uses sound waves to dislodge undesirable sea creatures that plague local fisheries, water supply.

Montclair State University professor Meiyin Wu believes has come up with a simple device to help container ships kill off tiny, undesirable sea creatures attaching themselves to ships from far off ports, according to a published report Sunday. The biologist and director of the Passaic River Institute believes the creatures, which have been plaguing local fisheries and clog the intake pipes of drinking water treatment facilities and power plants, can be killed off using sound waves, according to a NorthJersey.com report. "Ultrasound has special properties that have already been in use as a disinfectant to control unwanted organisms, such as bacteria in laboratories or surgical settings," said Wu, adding, "It has been used to disinfect …

See the stories that made headlines this past week in Montclair

Montclair State Professor Talks Lying and the Human Brain

Julian Keenan of Montclair State University’s Biology and Psychology departments talks about research and how parts of the brain can be turned off to prevent lying.

Whether you are young or old, everyone tells lies in one way or another on a daily basis.  Of course, there are all sorts of different lies — white lies, exaggerations, delusions, deceptions — and some are worse than others. But regardless of the what kind of lie it is, the same parts of the brain are used in manufacturing the fabrication. As April Fool’s Day approaches, Montclair Patch decided to talk with professor Julian Keenan of Montclair State University’s Biology and Psychology departments about the science of lies.  A portion of the conversation is below.  What kind of research have you done on the topic of lying? Keenan: We are looking at what areas of the brain are involved in deception, and the lying we are most interested in is…

And her efforts were recorded for reality show television. “We were rebuilding this elderly couple's home in Lavallette, NJ,” Vicedomini said. “They have the bay in their backyard and the ocean is on the other side of the street. The house got flooded up to the ceiling.” MTV , the United Way and mtvU, the network’s 24-hour college channel, recorded their efforts as part of their “Spring Fix,” program to air later this year.
