'Every Day Is a Holiday' Filmmaker To Speak at Montclair Film Festival

Theresa Loong will talk about her father's story of being a Malaysian-born Royal Air Force veteran who became a prisoner-of-war in Japan and eventually ended up in a New Jersey suburb.

A documentary filmmaker will talk about her film being shown at the Montclair Film Festival on May 4.  Theresa Loong, who directed "Every Day Is a Holiday," will talk about her father's story of being a Malaysian-born Royal Air Force veteran who became a prisoner-of-war in Japan and eventually ended up in a New Jersey suburb.  Loong was able to pry the full story from her father Dr. Paul Loong after discovering the wartime diary he'd kept secret — first from his Japanese captors, then his family — for over 60 years. Theresa's questions grew into her documentary "Every Day Is a Holiday," which is a title taken from a diary entry during a bleak time in her father's imprisonment when he swore that if he survived as a free man, "Every day …

It was an honor to be part of this project. Dr. Paul Loong is one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. This screening is a rare opportunity for American-born Chinese to get a glimpse of the world of their parents and grandparents.   more ›

Montclair Film Festival Announces Lineup

'We thought and hoped they would come out and rally around a film festival, and they really did,' said Chairman of the festival’s board Robert Feinberg.

It’s showtime for the Montclair Film Festival. This lineup for the second Montclair Film Festival was announced today and will feature more than 80 films and events — nearly doubling the first year’s total.  “Last year was our first year and the big discovery for us was our audience demand exceeded our ticket supply ... which was a good problem to have!” said Artistic Director Thomas Powers. “This year we addressed the problem by expanding our offerings.” The festival, which runs from April 29 through May 5, has added two theater venues this year and about 5,000 seats. The films will run the gamut, featuring 15 dramas, 16 documentaries, four comedies, three family movies and a plethora of shorts. Thehe festival will also spotlight six …

A Spectacle of Visuals Makes 'Stoker' a Must See

The film bookends the experiences of a young girl named India after she loses her father. Soon after, her mysterious Uncle Charlie moves into the house and brings with him secrets.

This column was written by Lori Wieczorek, editor-in-chief of Montclair State University's newspaper The Montclarion. "Stoker" is also playing now at the Clairidge Cinema, at 486 Bloomfield Ave.  "Stoker" opens with leisure. Heels click across open an road and draw our eyes to the film’s protagonist, India (Mia Wasikowska). From the opening scene the audience becomes acutely aware that the film will not follow the typical Hollywood structure. "Stoker" is a spectacle of visuals, playing with the viewer’s understanding of textures and camera movement. "Stoker" is the type of film that builds tension slowly, allowing us to adjust to the world that director Chan-wook park has constructed. "Stoker" bookends the experiences of India after she …

'Jack the Giant Slayer:' A New Spin on Old Tale

The flick-o-meter gives Jack the Giant Slayer a 3 out of 5.

The video review can also be seen on Youtube.  A new Jack and the Beanstalk remix serves up the fee fey foe fum to whole new audience. The CGI wizards in Hollywood have taken an old fairy tale and made it into kind of a big video game. This time Jack climbs the beanstalk to encounter not just one giant, but a whole villa ge of them in "Jack the Giant Slayer." Shot in 3D and packed with CGI , director Bryan Singer uses his skills to create a whole new story that kids may love. Sure there is a little romance and some gross out vulgar humor but, hey, they are giants after all. The CGI was a bit over the top but that is the way these fantasy movies are made these days. That along with a great acting cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Stanley …

Cloud Atlas Leaves You in a Fog [Movie Review]

This week's film is a nearly-three-hour mind bender based on David Mitchell's critically-acclaimed novel.

Six major plot lines, taking place over 500 years, featuring the same actors playing multiple roles: That's what you get with the movie Cloud Atlas. All of the stories are crosscut together, jumping back and forth across different time periods and locations ranging from a 19th-century South Pacific sea voyage to the distant post-apocalyptic future where humanity lives on the brink of extinction. The cast includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving and Hugh Grant. They do their best to tell the secrets of the universe and the human heart while leaving you, well, confused. Based on the novel by David Mitchell, 'Cloud Atlas' is simply too long and too scatterbrained. The central message is that we are all …

The "Flick-o-meter" is dumb and small. This was not only a GREAT film. It was a MASSIVE accomplishment. To say it was "all over the place" was, well, the point. Worse, and perhaps most telling, is that you didn't find that from these many pieces came a singular idea. In other words, it all came together. (And if you need any more than the last moment with Hanks and Berry, you might want to stick …   more ›
