Outdoor jazz festival, dance programs part of $284,500 federal funds given to township.
Montclair will receive more than $40,000 in National Endowment for the Arts grants as part of the agency’s state and regional grant program, according to a published report. While the state will receive 15 grants totaling $284,500, according to a Tuesday NJ.com report, the township will receive $45,000 in grants of that money for events and programs including a free outdoor jazz festival presented by Jazz House Kids, a series of dance works at Montclair State University as well as a $25,000 award to Montclair State’s “Permission Grants: Three New Works Without Compromise,” according to a Tuesday report on NJ.com. The water project, said one resident at the 3rd Ward community meeting Wednesday, 'will put a stake in the heart of that community' if it is approved.
The council is in an “information gathering phase” with regards to the Nishuane Park water well project in the 4th Ward, officials said during a community meeting this week. “We need to look at our need for water, our usage of water and what are the concerns people have regarding this pumping station, how do we balance the two and make an informed decision,” Third Ward Councilor Sean Spiller said at a Wednesday night meeting that included Mayor Robert Jackson and Superintendent Penny MacCormack. Township Manager Marc Dashield said all questions and comments from residents will be categorized, answered and presented at a future council meeting.
The township has received the transcripts from the two January public hearings about a proposal to construct a water well facility in Nishuane Park. Township Manager Marc Dashield said at the council meeting on Tuesday the township will now categorize the hundreds of questions and comments voiced by residents at the public hearings. Nishuane Park was given to Montclair more than a 70 years ago as public land, but there are no restriction’s preventing the township from building a proposed water treatment facility on that land, officials said. Township attorney Ira Karasick said on Tuesday there is no language in the parkland’s deed which explicitly restricts the construction of a water treatment facility in Nishuane Park near the intersection of Orange Road and High Street. “That deed has no language in it -- that I can see -- restricting the use of that property,” said Karasick. The Montclair Council received an earful of criticism and objections on Tuesday about a township plan to build a water facility in Nishuane Park. For the third time in a week, residents spoke at the public podium and cited both environmental concerns and the loss of parkland as reasons for the council to nix the plan. “This project will once again be diverting land protected by Green Acres,” said resident Audrey Hawley. “There has been no information provided giving a compelling reason for activating this well. Montclair homeowners around the park spoke out against the well facility project at the second of two public meetings on Thursday.
A water well proposal in Nishuane Park received a second round of rebuke Thursday night by residents in favor of preserving the parkland. More than 30 people turned out at the municipal building for a second night to cite their utter disapproval with the township’s Nishuane Well Production Facility Project. The township’s plan, a 38- by 41-foot water treatment facility and 10-foot wide access road from High Street on less than half an acre of the park, is designed to better accommodate Montclair’s growth during the next 30 years. “The sustainability of this supply source is – I don’t want to say infinite – but the projection ... forecasts it is a longtime sustainable source, ” said Andrew Holt, principal of Suburban Consulting Engineers…
