March for Babies Sunday in Brookdale Park

March of Dimes fundraiser intended to help premature babies.

Join us at March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser, and the oldest and best-loved walking event. It’s a family-friendly event where the community comes together to raise money to support research, services, education and advocacy in the fight against prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality. When you walk, you give hope to the babies born too soon or sick. The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies, and it funds research to find answers to the serious problems that threaten our babies. We've been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible $2.6 billion! Join the more than 7 million people who participate, donate and/or sponsor. Register to walk at …

Crews Install Retaining Wall at Edgemont Park

With the dredging done, construction of the retaining wall in the Montclair park began last week.

Crews working at Edgemont Park began installing the retaining wall in the pond late last week.  On Monday, crews could be seen placing double stacking large grey-colored blocks around the edge of the pond. This base portion of the wall will be different from the slate gray upper portion, according to the township. Construction of the wall will continue in sections.  The installation of the wall follows the dredging of the pond, which began in early March. The dredging will make the the pond deeper and is expected to remove sediment clouding the waters. The council approved the approximate $800,000 project in January.  Dredged dirt from the pond was also piled in the north end of the park.  The township released a statement on its website …

There is no effort to clean up the pond. The decision was made to leave half the contaminated sludge in place. This will also defeat the purpose of the dredging in the first place, which was to remove 5' of silt.   more ›

Support for Rail-Trail Delayed; Animal Welfare Committee Formed

Friends of the Montclair Township Animal Shelter members call the resolution to create animal welfare committee 'vague.'

Mayor Robert Jackson and the council delayed a vote on a resolution Tuesday supporting a cooperative effort between Montclair and surrounding municipalities to plan and develop a rail-trail park within Belleville, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Newark.  Councilor Renee Baskerville commented that the township’s Public Transportation Advisory Committee requested the council table the vote until the committee could make recommendations of its own on. The plan is to make good use of the old Boonton Line, which runs through the towns and into Hudson County. The rail only passes through about a mile of Montclair territory.  Back in August 2010, the council discussed plans to convert the rarely used railway 11-mile track from Upper …
