The Port Authority says it will speed up repairs to the Hoboken PATH station.
The Port Authority will suspended PATH service to midtown Manhattan for the next two weekends, according to a news release from the city of Hoboken. PATH service between Newark and 33rd street will stop running after 10 p.m. on Friday and will resume at 5 a.m. on Monday. The Newark to World Trade Center line will continue to run between New Jersey and New York from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8 and 9, and next Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16. PATH's Acting Director Stephen Kingsberry said it's a temporary inconvenience that will speed up restoration of full, 24-hour PATH service across the system. The Hoboken PATH station -- usually full of waiting PATH riders between New York and New Jersey -- remained quiet on Tuesday morning, while Port Authority workers continue to repair the massive damage that was done by Superstorm Sandy. Thousands of gallons of water flooded the Hoboken station, which is currently the only station that is still closed. Water came in through the walls and elevators leading to the station, in one case shattering the elevator's glass. The breaker rooms that house all the electrical wires for the tunnels were severely flooded too and are still being repaired, said acting director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Stephen Kingsberry. State, Port Authority warn of "significant" eastbound delays because of Cross Bronx bridge repairs, urge drivers to use mass transit, and to expect bus delays into the city through Labor Day.
This summer could be remembered as a traffic hell by the millions of people who travel east over the George Washington Bridge thanks to the closure of a lane on the oft-congested Cross Bronx Expressway from this Friday through Labor Day. The lane closure will take place on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which spans the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx. The bridge is already a chokepoint, as traffic from both levels of the GWB merge onto one roadway. Several other significant roadways feed into and out of the span, including the Harlem River Drive and Major Deegan Expressway.
