The essays are written by literary figures or local residents, and accompany the library's annual fundraiser.   This week's installment features Montclair Mayor Robert Jackson.  The Montclair Public Library and I have a wonderful, lifelong relationship and that relationship has brought me untold hours of joy, enlightenment and inspiration. NJ Charter School Students Learn More, Report Says

Newark charters lift statewide averages, while advantages not necessarily shown elsewhere

  Public school or charter school? New Jersey’s ongoing debate about whether traditional public schools or charters do a better job educating students got some provocative new data yesterday, courtesy of a study from Stanford University that came down on the side of the charters -- particularly in Newark's embattled school district. According to Stanford's Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO), charter school students overall made larger learning gains than their peers in traditional schools on state tests from 2007-2011. What's more, a third of the charters showed higher achievement levels than the other public schools in their districts, with a fifth doing significantly worse, the report said. NJ Transit Schedules Trains, Buses for the Holiday; Kids Ride Free

The holiday getaway begins Wednesday

  NJ Transit plans to offer "nearly normal Thanksgiving service levels on most of its lines to ensure customers’ travel plans go smoothly over the holiday weekend," according to a press release. However, storm damage could change some schedules and routes. Specifically, Gladstone Branch rail service remains suspended until further notice, and Newark Light Rail will continue to operate on a modified schedule between Newark Penn and Broad Street stations (service every half hour).  The release says, "This year, NJ TRANSIT will once again offer “early getaway” rail and bus service on Wednesday, November 21, for the benefit of customers leaving work early, and to provide additional capacity for customers traveling to Newark Liberty …
