Montclair Recreation day camp registration will begin Monday, May 6. Residents can register children online or in person on starting at 1 p.m. on Monday. To register online, visit register.community pass.net. In-person registrations will be taken at the Recreation Department, located in the municipal building, at 205 Claremont Ave. The township's day camp is for children ages 5-12 and will be held at Clary Anderson Arena, at 41 Chestnut St. There will be three two-week camp sessions available: July 8-19; July 22 to Aug. 2; and Aug. 5-16. Campers will enjoy arts and crafts, sports, drama, games, swimming and weekly trips. The fee is $170 for each two-week session. The registration deadline for Montclair Junior Baseball and Softball leagues has been extended until Thursday, Feb. 28. Registrations will be taken after Feb 28, but a $25 late fee will apply. The deadline for registration was orginally Feb. 11. The program offers baseball for boys and girls in grades 3 and 4, and grades 5 and 6. New this season is the middle school baseball program for boys and girls in grades 7 and 8 only. There will also be girls softball for grades 3 through 5 and grades 6 through 8. Teams will be formed by school. Each school will play a full schedule against other Montclair schools and nearby districts. They will be part of the Babe Ruth baseball league. The $2.2 million project to Rink 2 includes a new refrigeration system, boards and bleachers.
The first upgrades to the second ice rink at Essex County’s Richard Codey Arena since it opened in 1983 were unveiled yesterday. The ribbon cutting of the $2.2 million project drew county officials and elected representatives into the chilled air of Rink 2 on Monday. The work included modernizing the refrigeration system, repainting the rink, adding a new concrete floor under the ice surface and outside the rink, and replacing new boards and bleachers. The improvements, said Daniel Salvante, director of the Essex County Department of Parks, “have really put us into the 21st century as far as how we can maintain the ice.” Salvante added the upgrades, begun in April, could not have come to at a better time.
