Bloomfield Avenue Restaurant Burglarized

Leela’s Trinidad Cuisine, at 180 Bloomfield Ave., had money and a computer stolen last week.

A restaurant on Bloomfield Avenue was burglarized during the final hours of the day on Jan. 9, according to Montclair police.  Leela’s Trinidad Cuisine, at 180 Bloomfield Ave., was broken into between 9 p.m. and midnight that evening. The area around the cash register was ransacked, according to police.   The restaurant is located on the ground floor of a three-story building which houses another business and commercial space. The building is on the east side of Montclair’s busy business district running along Bloomfield Avenue.   The owner told police there was a pouch bag containing $150 missing and a laptop computer, valued at approximately $1,300, which was underneath the front counter in the restaurant.  The cash register was …

New York Giants Open Downtown Newark Eatery

New restaurant specializes in the ultimate comfort food – macaroni and cheese – with a twist.

Halsey Street in Newark has made way for Elbow Room, a restaurant that got its start in comfort food concoctions right across the Hudson River, thanks to New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck and former Giant Michael Strahan. Elbow Room, located at 41 Halsey Street, is close to downtown attractions, such as train stations, NJPAC and the Prudential Center. The casual corner joint, near Bleeker Street, recreates down-home macaroni and cheese using kicked-up flavors, like fiery buffalo chicken macaroni with Black River blue cheese and Frank's hot sauce, and heart-stopping poutine mac with short rib gravy, Yukon french fries and fresh cheese curds. Restaurateur Joel Bolden celebrated Tuesday the grand opening of Elbow Room's second …

Restaurants to Pay More for Sidewalk Dining

The Montclair Township Council increases fees, regulations for restaurants who offer outside seating.

If restaurants want to set up tables on Montclair sidewalks, they will now pay more to use the public space.  Montclair Township Council voted Tuesday to increase permit fees and regulations for restaurant owners who offer outdoor seating. However, a restaurant owner and the Montclair Center Business Improvement District say it strikes a fair balance. “The Montclair Center Business Improvement District is pleased that the council listened to the complaints registered by restaurants and the BID,” said Luther Flurry, director the Montclair BID.   Restaurant owners previously paid a permit fee of $150 a year for outdoor seating. The new proposal sets the yearly fees at $150 for restaurants with fewer than 13 seats, and $250 for those with …

Sarah is right. This could truly hurt these small business owners and make Montclair's great restaurant reputation disappear right along with the restaurants! That is something this town can not afford to lose.   more ›

Tapastry is without doubt the best tapas place this side of Madrid. Never have I eaten (it would be indignified for a bishop to say he "gorged") on paella, "drunken goat cheese," Serrano ham and the most amazing sauteed green beans and chorizo. Yum!   more ›

PHOTOS: A Crowded Taste Of Montclair Kicks Off Restaurant Week

Check out the food at participating restaurants through April 1

The Taste of Montclair kicked off the Rotary Club's fourth annual Montclair Restaurant Week on Monday evening, attracting a massive crowd that chowed down on some of the best food to be found anywhere. Indeed, the Taste of Montclair event draws so many people that it actually had to be held at the Grove in Cedar Grove as no Montclair venue could accommodate so many ticketholders. Over the last two years, Restaurant Week has raised nearly $15,000 for Montclair's three largest food charities: the Human Needs Food Pantry, Toni's Kitchen, and the Salvation Army Feeding Program. The event helps the needy and celebrates one of Montclair's greatest resources—its amazing restaurants. The event's financial success is the result of the diners who …

NICO Kitchen + Bar Serves Up Sophistication

New restaurant at NJPAC offers 'Italian without borders' menu designed for sharing

The curtain's been raised on NICO Kitchen + Bar, the new, chic eatery that raises the bar on dinner-and-a-show in Newark. Tucked inside the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), chef Ryan DePersio's third restaurant in Essex County is inviting with a cool, casual atmosphere and an "Italian without borders" menu of sophisticated dishes designed for sharing. "(These are) dishes that made me who I am today," said DePersio, the 33-year-old Nutley-born restaurateur who also owns Fascino in Montclair and Bar Cara in Bloomfield. Signature bites from his other restaurants, like the grilled pork burger, pomegranate-chili wings with gorgonzola dipping sauce and quattro formaggio pizza, have (thankfully) made their way onto the Newark menu. …
