Restaurant Health Code Violations, Masked Man Robs PNC, School Performance Reports and More

Check out the stories that made headlines this past week in town.

Fifteen restaurants in Montclair were cited for health code violations last year by local inspectors, according to township records.  A man wearing a mask flashed a handgun and robbed a Montclair bank Monday before escaping with an undisclosed amount of money, according to police.  A 38-year-old Montclair woman was indicted Monday on charges she fatally stabbed her live-in boyfriend in January, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.  Four teenagers were arrested last week for assaulting people in Glenfield Park with a fake handgun, according to police.  Northeast Elementary School passed most of its academic benchmarks in a recent state report, but schoolwide proficency in language arts was low and the school ranked "about …

Man Robs 7-Eleven With Knife, Makes Off With Lottery Tickets, Police Say

A 5-foot 10-inch white man with a thin build, robbed the convenience store of lottery scratch-offs, according to cops.

A man robbed the 7-Eleven in Montclair of more than $120 in lottery tickets with a large knife, according to Montclair Police.  A white male in his early 20s walked into the convenience store, located at 15 Bloomfield Ave., at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. The store clerk working at the cash register noticed the man browse around the store but not pick up anything.  The man finally approached the clerk at the register and asked for $120 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets. When the clerk asked for payment, the man raised his shirt to expose what is believed to be the butt of a large knife, according to police.  The clerk told police the man with the knife said something about not needing to pay and then left the store with the lottery …

Woman Robbed on Bloomfield Avenue With False Threat of a Gun

Kyle Carmichael, of Newark, and underaged minor were arrested on a bus shortly after the robbery.

  A Newark man and an underage minor robbed a 23-year-old woman of her cell phone on Tuesday saying they had a handgun, which later turned out to be false, according to Montclair police.  Kyle Carmichael, 19, and his female accomplice, whose name is withheld because of her age, were arrested on Tuesday after they allegedly robbed a woman of her iPhone while she was walking on Bloomfield Avenue near Pine Street shortly before 8 a.m., according to reports.  The woman, who is from Linden, told police when Carmichael and the minor approached her, he had his hand in his waistband. He threatened her with a gun if she did not hand over her phone.   The woman immediately gave the two her phone, and then Carmichael and the girl fled toward the bus …

Weekend Armed Robbery Reported on Jefferson Place

Montclair police are investigating an armed robbery that took place last weekend when a man flashed a gun at two people sitting in a car and took their money and cell phones. Police said the occupants were seated in a 2002 Mercedes Benz in the area of Jefferson Place around 7 p.m. when a man came up from behind the car and flashed a silver revolver at them. A gun was pointed at the driver through the open driver’s-side window, police said, and the man reportedly told the passengers to “Give me the money; give me the keys; give me your cell phones.” The two passengers gave the man $20 in cash, two cell phones and the keys to the car. Montclair Crime Rate Up Nearly 5%, Says Report

The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report for 2011 was released last week.

  The overall crime rate in Montclair rose about 5 percent in 2011 compared to 2010, according to a state report.  There was a total of 768 crimes committed in 2011, according to the New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report released last week. Out of eight categories of crimes, Montclair’s numbers increased in six of them. The largest jump was in motor vehicle thefts. There was a 182 percent increase last year, going from 23 incidents in 2010 to 65 in 2011.   When it came to violent crime, Montclair had a total of 81 incidents in 2011, up from 75 the previous year. While reports of rape decreased from four to one during that time, there was one murder, 46 robberies and 33 assaults -- all up from 2010.   The increase in crime in 2011 …

FBI Seeks Help Identifying TD Bank Robber

FBI releases photos of Monday's robbery at TD Bank.

  The Federal Bureau of Investigation is seeking the public’s help identifying the man who robbed a TD Bank on Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange on Monday. The man, described by the FBI as approximately 5’10” tall and 210 lbs., with a large build, salt-and-pepper hair and a goatee, approached a bank teller at approximately 1:15 p.m., brandished a silver semi-automatic handgun and demanded money be placed into a blue bag, officials said. The man was described as wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses, a dark sweater, blue jeans and dark shoes, according to the FBI. After getting the money, officials said the man fled on foot and was seen walking north on Pleasant Valley Way. The FBI released several photos of the man on Wednesday.  West Orange…
