James Caldwell High School freshman Dean Caravela surpasses father's record set in 1986, as well as 2004 school record.
Breaking a school record is one way to make your parents proud. But what happens when that record was formerly held by your dad? James Caldwell High School wrestler Dean Caravela achieved 35 wins his freshman year, the most in a single season in the program’s history. It’s a record his father Tom Caravela set in 1986, when he went 29-3 as a senior grappler with the Chiefs. The record was challenged by Blake Maffei, Mike Kwapniewski and Steve Martell, the latter who went 33-0 in his 2004 state championship season. Asked last week if he feels badly about surpassing his dad’s record, the 14-year-old with dark cropped hair and a big smile which reveals his braces, shook his head, looked at his father and said, “No.” Tom responded, “I’ll tell …

The Immaculate Conception High School's girls volleyball team surpassed expectations.
By Amy B. Popp The girls volleyball team of Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair surpassed expectations by defeating Orange 26-24 and 25-21 on Monday. In the first game, Immaculate came from behind to win the game. The ICHS team has been playing well all season but this was an especially important game for the girls because Orange is a much bigger school. All of the Immaculate players were stars but, in particular, Breanna Dennis and Chanelle Lester stood apart. Dennis had eight digs and five kills and Lester had 21 service points and seven aces. By winning this game, ICHS is now 8-2 and leads its division. This is a huge win for ICHS and the team is now poised for even greater success.

Montclair is recommended as a place to visit by the host committee of Super Bowl XLVIII.
In February 2014, the Super Bowl will be coming to the Meadowlands—and also, apparently, to Montclair. Montclair has been picked as an official place to visit by the host committee of Super Bowl XLVIII, one of a handful of North Jersey towns and cities, according to The Montclair Times. Besides Montclair, other NJ spots put forth include Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark, Ridgewood, and the Morristown/Florham Park area. Super Bowl officials estimate 400,000 visitors will participate in the weeklong Super Bowl festivities, generating nearly $600 million in spending. Only 82,500 of those visitors will actually have a ticket to the game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The rest will be spending their money around town at any number of …

Not just for masochists, boot camp workouts have legions of devotees. Find out what you might gain from trying one out in Montclair.
Having the best of intentions has never been equated with having the best of bodies—or even less flabby ones. So many of us have unused or infrequently used gym memberships, and even for those of us who do make it to the gym, we often lose a mental struggle with ourselves to stay on the treadmill for a full workout or complete that last set of reps. So what’s a person to do who wants to get in better shape but needs more motivation to do it? Well, that’s where boot camp comes in. Originating on the West Coast around 15 years ago, boot camp workouts have recently made their way to the East Coast and around the globe. While they may have originally appealed to athletes and hard-core fitness enthusiasts, there are now boot camps for people …
