Hayley Vicedomini, of Hopatcong, takes part in network's ‘Spring Fix’ as part of her Alternative Break program at MSU.
A Montclair State University student spending spring break at the shore isn’t that out of the ordinary. But Hopatcong native Hayley Vicedomini spent her time off from school at the Shore participating in the MTV alternative spring break program where she worked to rebuild a home devastated by Hurricane Sandy. And her efforts were recorded for reality show television. “We were rebuilding this elderly couple's home in Lavallette, NJ,” Vicedomini said. “They have the bay in their backyard and the ocean is on the other side of the street. Montclair schools will open additional days in May, and potentially February and March to make-up for closures during Hurricane Sandy.

However, Superintendent Penny MacCormack said on Monday that the district only has to recover one school day to reach the state mandated 180 days of class. The district already recovered two make-up days when the New Jersey Education Association’s annual Atlantic City conference was canceled on Nov. 8 and 9. In addition, Montclair schools had already scheduled three snow days into the calendar, said MacCormack. The additional school day will be held on Friday, May 24. MacCormack added that the district is scheduling more …

Spring break may come early for Montclair students. The Board of Education discussed moving the district’s spring break from April to March at its meeting on Monday. The possibility of changing the weeklong vacation was brought up by Tanya Coke in a committee report. According to The Montclair Times, Coke said having the break in March could help students interested in attending out-of-state camps and "...enable spring athletes to travel south" to train. Interim Superintendent Clarence Hoover said on Tuesday that it is not unusual for districts to move vacation dates to suit student needs. He added that the idea was brought up by the board for the first time on Monday. “Vacations vary ... in each state and where you are in the state…

A few fun ideas for adventurous parents and kids
For parents looking for some fun daytrips during spring break, here are some suggestions to take the kids! Turtle Back Zoo – Treetop Aerial Course Besides the animal exhibits, check out the Essex County Treetop Adventure aerial obstacle Course. Designed and built in the trees, each tree is equipped with a platform and visitors traverse from platform to platform through a variety of “elements” that will make the trip a challenge. There are two courses, beginning at about 10ft in the air and getting as high as 35ft in the air. Visitors will be attached to a continuous lifeline system that will become their zip line back down to the ground. $20 admission fee; under the age of 18 must have the liability waiver filled out by their parent …
