Contractor vans, tools and equipment were the targets of four thefts in the span of a day Monday, police said. At 6:30 a.m. on April 15, a man told police he returned to his work van parked in the 20 block of Grant Street to find the rear window smashed. He then found about $1,420 worth of power tools missing, according to police. A few hours later, at 8:20 a.m., another window of a work truck was smashed in the 10 block of Maple Avenue. The man told police he found a power tool missing valued at about $100. Police met with another contractor around 11 a.m. in the 700 block of Valley Road who said that three large air conditioner condensers were taken from a property. Montclair Police saw multiple incidents involving stolen packages, as well as a stolen car and an attempted burglary on Elmwood Avenue last week.
Montclair Police reported two thefts of delivered postal packages, a stolen vehicle parked outside a convenience store and an attempted burglary on Elmwood Avenue last week. A man was arrested on March 27 after 5:45 p.m. for stealing a delivered postal package placed in front of a door of a home in the 60 block of South Fullerton Avenue, according to police reports. The homeowner told police he had heard the storm door open and when he went to check, he saw a man walking down the driveway carrying a blue bag, police reports state. The homeowner reportedly told police he was aware a package had recently been delivered to his front door. Montclair Police Department reported the following theft from a motor vehicle and vandalism last week. Theft • A Dodge Charger was parked in front of a home on Franklin Place when it was broken into on the evening of Jan. 16. At around 7 a.m. the next day, the owner told police his wallet, containing credit cards and identification, were gone. The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report for 2011 was released last week.
The overall crime rate in Montclair rose about 5 percent in 2011 compared to 2010, according to a state report. There was a total of 768 crimes committed in 2011, according to the New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report released last week. Out of eight categories of crimes, Montclair’s numbers increased in six of them. The largest jump was in motor vehicle thefts. There was a 182 percent increase last year, going from 23 incidents in 2010 to 65 in 2011. When it came to violent crime, Montclair had a total of 81 incidents in 2011, up from 75 the previous year. While reports of rape decreased from four to one during that time, there was one murder, 46 robberies and 33 assaults -- all up from 2010. The increase in crime in 2011 …
