Let the hunt begin. The sixth year of Essex County's deer management program will begin Tuesday, Jan. 22. The hunt will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays until Feb. 7. Hunting will take place at South Mountain Reservation today and Thursday, and Jan. 29 in the afternoon only. In addition, hunters will be allowed to track trails in the Hilltop Reservation and the old Essex County Hospital Center site in the mornings and afternoons on Jan 31, and Feb. 5 and 7. The hunt has also been scaled back this year. The program has been reduced from 24 hunting sessions in 12 days in 2012 to nine sessions in six days this year. A massive crane repairing the Essex County courthouse roof toppled over around 11 am. Wednesday. No one was injured when a crane being used to repair the roof of the building collapsed and landed in the building parking lot Wednesday morning, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. said. “We were very, very lucky,” DiVincenzo said, “The county was off and nobody was injured.” Only a skeleton crew was working in the building at the time of the incident, he said. “It was a massive crane.” Repairs were being made to the building’s roof as well as replacing an antenna on the building for the county sheriff’s department. Downed wires, fallen streets wreak havoc in towns across the county.
More than 255,000 PSE&G customers in Essex County are without power Tuesday morning, in wake of Hurricane Sandy, the hybrid super storm that barreled through the region Monday night. As of Tuesday morning, PSE&G is reporting 1.4 million of its customers are affected by the outages, caused by unprecedented storm surges and the flooding of several substations. Essex County has the most outages out of Hudson (228,549), Bergen (235,683), Middlesex (211,673) and Union (179,387) counties, according to PSE&G. Essex County Codey Arena in West Orange will open as a relief center beginning Sunday 7 p.m. for residents during Hurricane Sandy, county officials announced. Essex County and the American Red Cross will provide bedding and water those who lose power or need to reach a safe place during the storm, expected to make landfall in New Jersey late Monday. Accommodations for pets will be provided at Codey Arena. All activities at the arena have been canceled and Essex County Turtle Back Zoo will be closed on Monday and Tuesday of next week. In light of this weekend's heat, the Essex County Sheriff's department has opened this site as a cooling centers for residents.
The Essex County Office of Emergency Management is advising residents that due to extreme heat conditions this weekend, the Codey Arena at the South Mountain Recreational Complex on Northfield Avenue in West Orange will be used as a cooling center for Essex County residents. The arena will be open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Local residents have more than one thing to be proud of after Sunday night's win by the Giants in the Super Bowl. Essex County's Codey Arena was featured in several Century 21 Real Estate commercials with none other than Apolo Ohno, a highly decorated Olympic medalist and speed skater taking the ice. Ohno arrived at the arena on Jan. 10 for a day of filming, county officials confirmed with Patch. From 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Century 21 rented out one of the rinks to shoot the commercials. The arena and the second rink remained open to the public. Ohno took photos with the children that were in the arena and met with residents, officials said.
