Montclair High Sends 9 Students to Ivy League

Montclair High School sees an increase in students attending in-state and historically black colleges.

Montclair High School’s Class of 2013 is going places. About 80 percent of graduates will attend four-year colleges in the fall, and another 10 percent have enrolled in two-year colleges, according to the district. 

More than 100 students, up from 75, will remain in New Jersey, spread among 23 colleges with Essex County College (31), Montclair State (12) and Rutgers (10) being the most popular.

Nine students will head to Ivy League schools, 18 to “Little Ivies” (up from 13 last year) and 22 students are going to “Public Ivies.”

About 15 percent of the Class of 2013 will attend schools on Barron’s Most Competitive colleges list, including Boston College, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, University of Chicago, Emory, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, MIT, New York University, Northwestern, Oberlin, the U.S. Military Academy, and Vanderbilt.

Nearly 30 percent more students, or 21 students, will attend historically black colleges, including Cheney (2), Delaware State (4), Hampton (2), Howard (3), Morehouse (4), Shaw, Spelman (3), Tuskegee and Virginia State.

Two students will study at the Julliard School and four have enrolled in the military.
